What Is an Annuity?
An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You give them money, and they guarantee certain benefits. Here are the two main types I work with:
MYGA (Multi-Year Guarantee Annuity)
Think: "Super CD"
- Fixed guaranteed rate for 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years
- Current rates: 5.0% - 5.8% (based on term & amount)
- NO market risk - your rate is locked in
- Tax-deferred growth (no annual taxes on interest)
- Best for: Safety, predictable growth, CD alternatives
FIA (Fixed Index Annuity)
Think: "Market upside without the downside"
- Linked to market index (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, etc.)
- FLOOR: Guaranteed 0% minimum - you can't lose principal
- CAP/Participation rates: Capture 60-165% of index gains
- Premium bonus: Up to 10% added to your initial deposit
- Interest boost: Extra interest credited after first term
- Best for: Higher growth potential with complete downside protection

⚠️ The Fine Print (What Most Agents Won't Tell You)
I believe in transparency. Here are the REAL costs and restrictions you need to know:
🔒 SURRENDER FEES (10-Year FIA Schedule)
Most annuities allow 5% penalty-free withdrawal per year (or your RMD, whichever is greater). If you take out MORE, you pay surrender charges on the excess:
💸 TAX ON WITHDRAWALS
- Withdrawals are taxed as ORDINARY INCOME (not capital gains)
- LIFO taxation: Gains come out first (fully taxable)
- Your tax rate depends on your tax bracket (12%, 22%, 24%, etc.)
- Example: 22% bracket, withdraw $20K gain = $4,400 to IRS
🚫 IRS 10% PENALTY (Under Age 59½)
- If you withdraw BEFORE age 59½, IRS adds a 10% penalty
- This is ON TOP of ordinary income tax
- Example: $20K withdrawal at age 55 = $2,000 IRS penalty + $4,400 income tax = $6,400 total (32%!)
- Exceptions: Death, disability, annuitization (rare)
📊 REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS (RMDs)
- At age 73, you MUST start taking distributions from non-qualified annuities
- Amount based on IRS life expectancy tables (~3.9% at age 73, increases each year)
- If you don't take RMD, IRS penalty = 25% of required amount!
- RMDs are taxable income (can push you into higher bracket)
- Example: $200K annuity at 73 = ~$7,800 RMD (fully taxable)
💡 Bottom Line: Annuities are LONG-TERM vehicles (5-10+ years). They work great if you don't need the money short-term AND you're comfortable with the tax treatment. If you might need full access in 1-3 years? Probably not the right fit. That's the honest truth.
